Alaska's cruise season runs late April through September. Here is what May, June, July, August, and September each deliver for weather, wildlife, daylight, and price.
There is no bad month to cruise Alaska, but the months are meaningfully different. Rather than chasing a single 'best' date, decide which trade-off you want: dry and affordable, warm and bright, or wildlife-rich and moody.
May is Alaska's driest cruise month and often its best value. Snow still caps the peaks, bears emerge from dens, and ports feel calm before peak season crowds.
The trade-off is cooler temperatures, roughly 45°F to 60°F, and fewer whales, since humpback numbers build through the summer.
June brings long daylight, warming temperatures, and the start of strong whale activity, with prices climbing toward peak. Late June is the point where nearly everything is open, staffed, and running.
July delivers the warmest weather of the season, around 60°F to 70°F on a good day, the fullest excursion calendar, and the highest fares. Book early: the best excursions and balcony categories sell out first.
August is the strongest month for whale watching and salmon runs, which in turn means excellent bear viewing. Rain increases, especially in Ketchikan and Sitka, and daylight begins shortening noticeably.
September brings fall color in the interior, the season's lowest prices, and the first realistic northern lights chances on a Denali extension. Expect the wettest, coolest conditions and a shorter list of operating excursions.
Mid-June through mid-August offers the warmest weather, longest daylight, and fullest excursion calendar, making it the safest choice for first-time visitors. May and September cost less, with cooler and wetter conditions.
July is typically the warmest and one of the driest months in Southeast Alaska, with daytime highs often in the 60s Fahrenheit.
Humpback whales are present from May through September, with peak sightings in July and August as feeding activity increases.
